Face masks are a common piece of equipment for a variety of medical situations. The right mask can make a real difference for breathing in and out. The right mask can help to protect the wearer's nasal passages from harsh, polluted environments. Face masks are used for a variety of conditions. Some conditions require very specific face protection or face evacuating systems.

One type of face masks is used for CPR. While normal CPR does not require face masks, some areas require them for their workers' protection. Areas that work outside, on roofs or in areas with poor air quality sometimes require face masks in order to maintain adequate breathing for the patient. In such conditions, face masks made from a special material used for the purpose are essential. This material used for face masks contains an extra layer of moisture-repelling membranes.

A different type of mask that may be required in some fields is one that provides a better job at preventing splashes or drips. These droplets or spills occur when something drops to the ground, lands on the face and then gets stepped on again. This type of mask prevents the droplets from staying in the mask. This improves the breathing ability of the wearer and prevents accidental injury.

Thread count is a measurement that can be used to indicate the number of threads per inch. More threads per inch means a better fit and more resistance to slippage. Less thread count may result in a more comfortable mask, but it may not provide a sufficient barrier against drips or drops. In some cases, a lower thread count may be better because it may allow a larger amount of internal air to circulate around the face.

In workplaces where breathing is critical, two layers are usually required for protection. The most common materials used are polyurethane foam and polystyrene. While both work well, some employers prefer the nonslip and non-corrosive n95 face masks made with polyurethane foam. These types of masks are available in both disposable and durable forms. They are also available in sizes appropriate for men, women and children.

Some employers use surgical masks for protection in certain tasks, such as operating rooms and dental procedures. Medical or dental face masks are usually made from fiberglass, vinyl or fabric materials. Fabric face masks are often used for applications in environments where breathing is critical, such as the emergency room and intensive care units. Fiberglass and vinyl face masks are usually used for applications that require a tight seal, such as the lab or an intensive care unit.
